The Quiet Struggle: Does your voice reflect the authority you truly embody?
Imagine standing in a room full of colleagues, ready to voice your thoughts, but finding your words barely rise above a whisper (if you even utter them at all). The inconspicuous silence, almost comforting in its simplicity, might be keeping you from the recognition you deserve.
We all face moments where our voice doesn’t match the strength of our expertise. Was our voice ever powerful? Do we need to take back our power, or do we need to take hold of our power?
Either way, becoming a more confident and powerful communicator is the clear path forward. How do you get there from here?
Possible Culprit #1 – The Jigsaw of Clarity
Each conversation, every presentation, is a piece of a larger puzzle. It’s easy to get entangled in the inconsistency of our messages. Are we clear and consistent in framing our points, or do we weave a web too complex to traverse?
Think about a time you left a conversation wondering if your point resonated. What if the lack of a clear messaging is not about what you’re saying but how you’re constructing the narrative?
What you’re trying to say might be clear in your mind, but may emerge in any one of a number of ways:
- What has become known as “word salad” – a garbled hodgepodge of words that confuses your audience (and remember, confused minds take no action)
- Interrogative instead of declarative – using “upspeak” at the end of sentences as though you’re asking, not telling, asking your audience to validate your thinking, which takes away from your authority immediately
- Disconnected – if you use a lot of filler words (think um and ah) or repetitive words (think “like” and “just”) or takeaway words (as in “I think…” or “I would say”), you’re also taking away your own authority position and disconnecting from your audience
Possible Culprit #2: The Underutilized Reservoir of Your Insights
We’ve all been there—holding onto insights that could spark a transformation, yet letting them wither unsaid. Do you own that these insights are part of the power you bring to the conversation, or are you overshadowed by doubt, fear of looking stupid, and thus reluctant to share?
Why do we, sometimes unknowingly, is shield others from our insights? Perhaps the challenge lies not in knowing but in believing our insights are valuable and must be heard.
The fact is that there are things that people can ONLY hear from YOU. Your insights are hard-won, powerful bits of knowledge based on YOUR experiences combined with YOUR heart, your mind, and your intentions to do good and help others. Give yourself permission to own them.
Crafting Perception with Confidence
Building confidence is akin to constructing a house, one brick—one interaction—at a time. How do the choices we make, in the way we speak or act, sculpt how others perceive our authority?
Consider the psychological magic of how our communication style can change our surroundings. What steps will you take to ensure your authority is as clear as the sky on a Midwestern summer day?
Think back to the most powerful speakers you’ve ever observed. Yes, these people are likely in front of large
gatherings, and you might not be, but the principles are the same.
They’re confident, right? You come away thinking “Wow, they really know their stuff,” or, even better, “I learned a lot from her,” or “That blew me away; wow!” It’s all a matter of THEM owning their own power, having already built their “house” of communication confidence.
They (like me) probably weren’t always like that. At one time, they were less confident, less certain, less sure about their message and how to communicate it effectively.
How did they get to where they are now? Each brick of that house they built represents practice – like that joke I love to quote about the tourist who asked the NYPD officer “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” and he replied “Practice, practice, practice.”
The Powerful Dance of Communication
Engaging fully in the dance of communication isn’t just an act; it’s an empowering journey where each step you take holds and builds your power. When was the last time you felt the full rhythm of your words in sync with your intentions?
Isn’t it time for you to feel that way? You can. It’s locked inside of you. I can help you unlock it, if you’re ready to set your inner confident communicator free.
